These times are not easy for the migrant community.

Amid so much uncertainty, there is something very simple—but very powerful—you can do to protect your family: have a Power of Attorney.

This legal document allows you to name a trusted person to make important decisions if you are unable to do so.

Here are five reasons why this document can make the difference between chaos and stability, between fear and peace of mind.

  1. Because your children deserve someone to care for them if you are not there.

Imagine one day you can’t return home. Who will pick up your children from school? Who will be able to talk to a doctor if they get sick? Who will tell them that Mom or Dad loves them and will do everything possible to return? With a Power of Attorney, you can choose who will care for them.

  1. Because your bills, your house, and your belongings don’t manage themselves.

You’ve worked hard. If you’re detained or deported, someone must continue paying the rent, driving your car, taking care of your business, and protecting what you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

With a Power of Attorney, that trusted person can act on your behalf. It’s a way to protect what you’ve built.

  1. Because your family shouldn’t suffer more than necessary.

If you don’t have this document, your family could face long and costly legal proceedings just to help you. A Power of Attorney gives them the tools to act quickly.

  1. Because no one should face a medical emergency without someone to speak for them.

An accident. An illness. A hospital. If you can’t speak, who will decide for you? Who will know what you want? This document can also include medical decisions.

  1. Because living with worry shouldn’t mean living without plans.

Having a Power of Attorney isn’t giving up. On the contrary, it’s preparing. It’s about facing what could happen and saying, “I’m ready.” It’s about leaving clear instructions.

This document doesn’t cost much, and you don’t need to be a lawyer to obtain it. Many community organizations can help you for free or at a very low cost. The important thing is not to wait.

Because if one day you’re not there, don’t leave your family with questions. Leave them with answers… with protection.

Do it for yourself. Do it for your loved ones. Do it today.
