After weeks of anguish, reality prevailed and Joe Biden passed the baton to Kamala Harris. It was a triumph of his sense of historical responsibility: had he stayed in the race and lost to Donald Trump, the judgment of history would have been devastating.

Now Biden says goodbye as a worthy patriarch. A consistent politician who dedicated more than five decades of his life to serving the public interest with decency and honorability.

Kamala inherits a mission and a challenge: to prevent Donald Trump’s return to power, and to reunite a Democratic family that had lost faith and hope.

In just 24 hours, Harris’ campaign raised $81 million from 888,000 donors and nearly 60,000 volunteers signed up to volunteer for his campaign. This is the main thermometer to verify that the generational change was a breath of fresh air that resurrected the soul of the Democrats.

As the daughter of a Jamaican father and a Tamil mother from India, Kamala experiences firsthand the reality of migrant communities.

At 59 years old, her life is a testament to the spirit that animates all expatriates: sacrifice and effort to provide well-being and a better future for our people.

As an attorney, California attorney general, senator and vice president, she has been a tireless advocate for civil rights.

She supports the Dream Act and opens the door for the legalization of more than 11 million undocumented immigrants.

One of her first acts as a candidate was to confirm Julie Chávez-Rodríguez, granddaughter of the venerable César Chávez, as manager of her presidential campaign.

She has been a fierce protector of women’s reproductive rights and has pushed for sensible reforms to regulate firearms.

In her first message from Democratic campaign headquarters in Delaware, Kamala made clear that her experience as California attorney general will allow her to deal with a convicted criminal accused of sexual abuse and 34 fraud charges. “I know guys like Donald Trump,” she said with a grimace of a smile.

Nancy Pelosi described her as a “brilliantly astute” woman. That strong temperament will serve her well when she crosses swords with Trump on September 10 in the second presidential debate.

During her first campaign speech, Kamala articulated, with a single question, the predicament facing more than 150 million eligible voters in 2024.

“What country do we want to live in? In a country of freedom, compassion and the rule of law. Or in a country of chaos, fear and hatred?” The answer to that question remains up in the air to be answered at the polls with your vote on Tuesday, November 5.
