San Jose Earthquakes
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes, Wells Fargo, and Silicon Valley Education Foundation will be presenting 17 Santa Clara County college-bound seniors each with $1,500 scholarships to help support their STEM-focused academic careers as part of the Goals for Education program. All 17 students are the first in their family to go to college, with 16 recipients attending a four-year university despite the uncertainty of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Quakes are always looking to support our local students in securing a college education,” said Earthquakes Chief Operating Officer Jared Shawlee. “With the help of Wells Fargo and the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, we’re fortunate to be able to impact the lives of our future generations in their pursuit of higher education, especially during these uncertain times.”
The Goals for Education scholarship program commits $500 from Wells Fargo for every goal the Quakes score during the regular season. During the 2019 season, the Earthquakes scored 52 goals, their second most in a single season since returning to Major League Soccer in 2008. Earning $500 per goal, the Quakes raised $26,000.

Scholarships are to be used towards tuition, books, supplies, or other academic-related expenses and must be spent within the 2020-21 school year.

The 17 Santa Clara County seniors selected are: Loc Buu (Yerba Buena High School), Fausthina Dalit (William C Overfelt High School), Branson Dao (Yerba Buena High School), Alexander Hoang (Yerba Buena High School), Vicky Huynh (Evergreen Valley Highschool), Kristina Le (Yerba Buena High School), Nina Linh Nguyen (Evergreen Valley High School), Esteban Llaneza (Independence High School), Kailani Medina (Piedmont Hills High School), Alberto Mendez-Perez (Latino College Preparatory Academy), Nathan Ng (Santa Clara High School), Hieu Nguyen (Piedmont Hills High School), Jessica Plancarte Lopez (Latino College Preparatory Academy), Prabal Sharma (Fremont High School), Pauline Tang (Mt. Pleasant High School), Lucy Tran (Yerba Buena High School), and Samantha Tran (Piedmont Hills High School).
In the Fall, these students will be attending the following colleges: Brown University; Dominican University; California Institute of Technology; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; Cal State Long Beach; San Jose State University; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Davis; University of California, Los Angeles; and University of Southern California.
Their intended majors include: Architecture, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Health and Human Sciences, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Nutritional Sciences, Pre-Nursing, and Psychology.
