SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes, Wells Fargo, and Silicon Valley Education Foundation will be presenting 17 Santa Clara County college-bound seniors each with $1,500 scholarships to help support their STEM-focused academic careers as part of the Goals for Education program. All 17 students are the first in their family to go to college, with 16 recipients attending a four-year university despite the uncertainty of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Quakes are always looking to support our local students in securing a college education,” said Earthquakes Chief Operating Officer Jared Shawlee. “With the help of Wells Fargo and the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, we’re fortunate to be able to impact the lives of our future generations in their pursuit of higher education, especially during these uncertain times.”

The Goals for Education scholarship program commits $500 from Wells Fargo for every goal the Quakes score during the regular season. During the 2019 season, the Earthquakes scored 52 goals, their second most in a single season since returning to Major League Soccer in 2008. Earning $500 per goal, the Quakes raised $26,000.

“Wells Fargo recognizes that higher education is a powerful tool for achieving income mobility and is proud to invest philanthropically to help local students succeed academically,” said Wells Fargo Silicon Valley Region President Max Seetho. “We want everyone to have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and prosper.”

Scholarships are to be used towards tuition, books, supplies, or other academic-related expenses and must be spent within the 2020-21 school year.

“The vision of Silicon Valley Education Foundation is that every student becomes a successful and productive adult” said Dr. Lisa Andrew, President and CEO of Silicon Valley Education Foundation. “Our strong partnership with Wells Fargo and the San Jose Earthquakes assists local students in achieving their college dreams.”
