The USS Hornet Museum (Hornet) is partnering with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Office of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) to host the 2nd Annual Stem-to-Sea-and-Sky Program on Saturday, March 12th from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. This special science teacher training event, which is FREE for all Bay Area teachers, will be held aboard the Hornet at 707 W. Hornet Ave., Pier 3 in Alameda, CA.
In addition to no cost for Bay Area teachers to attend the Hornet 2nd Annual Stem-to-Sea-and-Sky Program, all class supplies will also be provided free of charge. Advanced registration is required. About the Stem-to-Sea-and-Sky Program: Instructors from the USNA and the Hornet will be on hand to demonstrate project-based learning techniques, as well as to host fascinating hands-on activities on important topics such as electrochemistry, materials science, fluid mechanics, and more. Tours of the spaces used for the Hornet’s STEM education programs, which demonstrate and explain STEM classroom concepts aboard the Bay Area’s famous “floating museum,” will also be offered throughout the afternoon.
Since 2011, the Hornet’s STEM-to-Stern programs have used the ship itself as a platform for teaching STEM. Spaces and equipment from the forecastle anchor chains to the engine room turbines, as well as the museum’s aircraft collection, illustrate STEM concepts in a unique historical setting. Volunteer and staff instructors share their knowledge of the workings of the ship to provide a context for science and the evolution of technology. A registered state and national historic landmark, the Hornet is also home of the largest collection of Apollo space mission artifacts on the West Coast.
About the USNA: The USNA is a leading engineering institution preparing students for careers as technologists and military leaders. The STEM Office capitalizes on the USNA’s unique resources, particularly the educators and midshipmen engineers/scientists-in-training, in the development of its STEM outreach programs. The USNA Faculty bring their educational expertise and practical research and development experience to provide on- and off-site workshops to about 800 educators per year. These highly-successful programs focus on project-based learning in engineering design, robotics, chemistry, physics, applied math, computers, biology, and SeaPerch, as well as in advanced topics in many engineering fields.
