Mexico will be holding its presidential elections this Sunday, June 2. Of the millions of Mexicans residing abroad, a total of 226,661 registered to vote.

If you haven’t registered, don’t worry. You can go to vote on Sunday with a valid INE credential at 23 consular offices. Find the nearest consulate at https://votoextranjero.mx/.

So I share 10 reasons to vote. In reality, they are applicable not only to Mexicans, but to all migrants and expatriates in the world who have the right to exercise their vote in their country of origin.

  • If you vote you stay involved and connected with political and social events in your home country.
  • Your vote can influence policies that affect expats, such as taxes, social security, and international relations.
  • You ensure that issues affecting expats are represented and addressed by elected officials.
  • Decisions on issues such as healthcare, education and economic policy can affect you and your family, even if you live abroad.
  • Voting can lead to greater care for expat communities, such as better consular services and support networks.
  • Your remittance shipments have an important social and economic impact. It is only fair that you have a say in the future of your community of origin.
  • If you vote for someone who puts the protection of the rights of citizens abroad as a high priority, you can guarantee better protection.
  • Voting is a powerful way to continue participating in the governance and future of your home country, no matter where you live.
  • If you vote in elections in your home country, you set an example of democratic commitment.
  • Voting is a fundamental civic duty that supports the democratic process and ensures that the government reflects the will of the people.

Of course there are many more reasons to vote, for example, giving a voice to those who cannot vote.

If you vote, you acquire even more moral authority to express your opinion on the issues, problems and challenges that affect you, your family, your community and your country, and do your part so that the results of the votes reflect not only your dreams and aspirations, but those of everyone.

It’s time to vote.
