It’s January and I want to start by wishing everyone a happy New Year!

I am excited for all that we can accomplish together in 2016. We will continue to work with Neighborhood Associations to host litter pick up and dumpster days, support our local businesses in our newsletter, attend business association meetings, and build our youth leadership with our Youth Commissioner and our Youth Outreach staffer, Jesse. My staff and I will continue our twice monthly community office hours, to help existing Neighborhood Associations and neighborhoods who have yet to establish their own associations.

My office is looking forward to hosting the annual Ethiopian, Colombian, and Mexican flag raisings to honor and commemorate the many cultures that help shape District 5 and San José as a whole.

And we have new things to look forward to: another Mayor’s budget message and season is ahead. In fact, you are all invited to the Community Budget Priority Setting on Feb. 22. If you have any questions, please contact my office and we will make sure you get a ticket. Space is limited, so be sure to let us know as soon as possible.

We are also looking at new opportunities with the Super Bowl coming to the Bay Area, great pedestrian and lighting upgrades coming to some of our neighborhoods, the improvements to Plata Arroyo Park starting this year, and an exciting new coding class for the children of East San José. We also have some amazing community groups to partner with including Reading Partners, who are looking for volunteers to help our children develop and strengthen their reading and interpersonal skills.

As always, I want to urge you to reach out to me and my staff if you have any questions, requests, or suggestions. You can come ask me at my office hours, find me or my staff in the district, speak to us at one of your neighborhood association meetings, or call or email us.

I am looking forward to all that we will accomplish together in 2016!

Sincerely,

Councilmember/Consejal,

Magdalena Carrasco
