SAN JOSE, CA – The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) is excited to announce the 2019 California State Elementary Spelling Bee winner, Vayun Krishna. The Palo Alto sixth-grader, who attends Challenger School – Middlefield, also took top honors at the SCCOE Spelling Bee in March.

About 55 fourth- through sixth-grade students from 29 California counties gathered at the San Joaquin County Office of Education for the ninth consecutive year. After the 11th round, Krishna emerged victorious with the winning word, “rapport” (definition: relation characterized by harmony, conformity, accord, or affinity).

Also representing Santa Clara County at the state spelling bee was Ari Philip, a sixth-grader from John Sinnott Elementary School in the Milpitas Unified School District. Philip made it to the fourth round.

The Santa Clara County Board of Education honored Krishna and Philip at a Board meeting on June 19.

The 2019 California State Elementary Spelling Bee was sponsored by Teachers College of San Joaquin. All participants received a Kindle Fire inside a Spelling Bee backpack, and Krishna was also awarded a $250 Barnes & Noble gift card.
